DOJ's "Not Yet" Response to a Merger of DISH and DIRECTV Is a Win for T-Mobile

 As was the case a couple of years ago, the U.S. Department of Justice still isn't interested in letting satellite television brands DISH Network (NASDAQ:DISH) and AT&T (NYSE:T)-owned DIRECTV merge into the sole company of its kind -- at least not yet.

The DOJ's chief concern is a potential lack of competition in rural areas, where satellite dishes are often consumers' only option for cable TV. According to the New York Post, the DOJ's antitrust arm would only be willing to reconsider the idea once additional 5G coverage is available in the country's more outlying areas.

It makes sense. While computer engineering vs computer science wireless speeds aren't cut out for data-heavy digital video transmissions, 5G speeds are. And of course, these connections won't require physical lines stretched all the way to remote customers' homes. A nearby cell tower will do the trick.

They can simply buy streaming cable from the company most likely to provide their wireless at-home internet service. That may well be T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS), which has been working on such a product for years.

Infinera, Telecom Infra Project, and Telefónica Collaborate to Expand DCSG DRX Series Deployments to Peru

 Announced a collaboration between Telecom Infra Project (TIP) and Telefónica Peru to commercially deploy a TIP-developed Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG) solution using Infinera’s DRX-30 hardware and Converged Network Operating System (CNOS). The deployment is part of Telefónica’s Fusión Project, an initiative that aims to transform Telefónica’s global transport network by simplifying network operations while increasing capacity for customers.

The deployment of TIP’s DCSG solution in Peru is intended to support 4G and 5G mobile connectivity and fixed services across Telefónica’s global footprint.  To take a popular proverb and completely misquote it, “the path to hell is paved with poorly managed projects".Misquote or not, there are tons of failed products out there. Anyone remember the Microsoft Zune?

Microsoft’s response to the iPod failed to capture even 10% of the MP3 player market share, and according to Tony what jobs can you get with a computer science degree, President of Yeti LLC, this was largely down to poor project management.

In an interview, he said that it was clear Microsoft did not do enough research or prototyping [when developing the Zune], stating: “If it had, Microsoft would have learned prior to release that consumers didn’t truly value Zune’s features.”

A similar story can be told of the Virtual Boy, Nintendo’s worst-selling console of all time. There are many reasons attributed to the failure of this product, including a high price, poor display, lack of portability, and even health concerns. 

When projects are managed effectively, issues like this can be captured and resolved before they ever cause any real problems for the business. And with lots of different project management tools out there - one to suit everyone and anyone - there’s really no excuse for poorly managed projects anymore.

Infiot Launches with AI-Powered Intelligent Access for Remote IoT Devices

 Infiot, a newly emerged IoT startup, has unveiled its Intelligent Access platform, a cloud-delivered intelligent thin wireless edge that supports wired, wireless and cellular connectivity, according to the release. Infiot’s Intelligent Edge reportedly combines connectivity, zero trust security and edge-computing for remote users, sites and devices anywhere in the world. Infiot said the platform is deployed in production with organizations in manufacturing, healthcare, education, hospitality, retail, and managed service providers.

Cable-Tec Expo Discusses Opportunities in NextGen TV

 Presenters at the virtual SCTE-ISBE Cable-Tec Expo 2020 on Oct. 14 examined a pair of ATSC 3.0-related issues of importance to cable operators, including the technical considerations of transitioning headend operations as broadcasters begin to take on NextGen TV and the opportunities the new broadcast standard offers to deliver enhanced TV viewing experiences to audience members with visual disabilities.

TIC 3.0 PM Touts Better Security Flexibility, Eyes More Use Cases

 The head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA’s) TIC Program Office emphasized that the Trusted Internet Connections (TIC) 3.0 initiative aims to create more flexible and efficient ways for Federal agencies to improve security, and said his office is considering a wide range of additional use cases to help agencies implement the framework.

“The traditional networking compass is broken,” declared Sean Connelly, CISA’s TIC Program Manager and computer science vs engineering, today at MeriTalk’s virtual TIC Talks event.

That compass – which has tended to view data flows through the traditional lens of vertical and horizontal paths – now begs for agencies to adopt security frameworks that give them much greater visibility into their networks and threat vectors, along with increased flexibility to architect security according to their varied missions, he explained.

That improved visibility, Connelly said, will greatly improve situational awareness and help out agency security operations centers and CISA threat-hunting analysts to protect networks.

Against a threat landscape that continues to grow more perilous, and agency data flows that are expanding at warp speed, Connelly explained how TIC 3.0 accommodates agencies’ increased use of cloud services and better positions Feds to deal with modern attack scenarios, including “living off the land” exploits that have been long lasting and difficult to detect.

Four years after SOM first broke ground on Hopper Hall, the first dedicated cyber studies building for the U.S. Armed Forces, the latest addition to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) campus in Annapolis, Maryland, is now open.

Because the USNA campus contains an eclectic mix of architectural styles, from Beaux-Arts to modernism, SOM chose to keep Hopper Hall contextual in its massing and design. As such, the rectangular academic building rises only just slightly higher than the neighboring Nimitz Library, and the jobs with computer science degree precast facade is similar as well. The pattern continues inside, as intersecting white columns and beams create repeating “boxes.”

Hopper Hall sits on the campus’s perimeter along the Severn River, and as such, security concerns dictated both the programmatic and facade arrangement. At the base, the area most susceptible to both flooding and potential blasts, the facade is at its most solid, gradually peeling away as the building rises to reveal multistory windows. The hall’s aquatic labs (the Surface and Underwater Robotics Facility and the Shared Waterfront Activities Lab) are also located at the ground floor, while the building’s more sensitive areas (offices, data centers and labs, classrooms, and research facilities) are on higher floors.

Palo Alto Networks rolls out identity-based microsegmentation in Prisma Cloud

 Palo Alto Networks is releasing new features for its Prisma Cloud security platform. New features in this latest release will integrate technology from Palo Alto's 2019 acquisition of Aporeto, a machine identity-based microsegmentation company. Other new Prisma Cloud features include data loss prevention, and identity and access management security.

With Palo Alto's Prisma Cloud, organizations can securely connect office branches and mobile users to the cloud, allow for SaaS adoption with a cloud access security broker, and improve security across multi-cloud deployments. 

With the integration of Aporeto, Palo Alto is bringing identity-based microsegmentation into Prisma Cloud. The technology will provide visibility of network communications along with security policy control and management, the company said. 

Securing the cloud is a major focus for computer science vs computer engineering Alto, along with securing the enterprise and providing security with its AI-powered platform Cortex. Over the last two years, Palo Alto built up its cloud security capabilities with the acquisition of the cloud security startup RedLock, as well as the purchase of Evident.io and Aporeto.

"This presents a requirement for security teams to integrate security across the full application lifecycle and deliver security through a platform-centric approach as markets converge. The innovation with Prisma Cloud 2.0 speaks to this approach."

New NASA mentor program links Boeing, Southern University

 NASA has signed its newest mentor-protégé agreement. The latest arrangement is between Boeing and Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Under the 18-month program, the historically black university will get new expertise on how to win federal contracts. And Boeing will get a pipeline of engineering students to help fill jobs at the nearby computer science major jobs Assembly Facility, where it’s helping to build NASA’s new Space Launch System. This agreement does a lot of things for the university. First of all, it provides training and business development for Southern as a protégé. And this training and business development done based on what they call a need assessment, which means that Boeing and Southern actually agreed on some of the things that the large corporations can provide to the university. This agreement also provides enhanced capacity for contracting opportunities, which is the main thrust of all of this. A lot of HBCUs, a lot of schools, they are acquainted with grants, but they’re not acquainted with contracts. They are large opportunities out there for schools being able to efficiently do contracts, and contract work. And we’ve done that for some time. This agreement actually helps us to enhance our capabilities, to make us more efficient. And the training, we have milestones over an 18 month period in which we will participate in the training. And all of this provides opportunities for our faculty, our staff, and students.

Companies restore pay, bonuses as tide turns

 Indian companies are starting to restore employee salaries that were cut due to the severe business disruptions from the pandemic and lockdowns, and are also offering incentives to workers amid a gradual recovery in the economy and pickup in business activity.

While most of these companies are seemingly benefiting from changed consumer behaviour due to the pandemic, there are, however, growing instances of those that continue to be in cash-conservation mode but are still rewarding their staff.

For instance, Pune-based engineering services firm Forbes Marshall has fully rolled back pay cuts and restored salaries to pre-covid levels. Last month, hospitality firm OYO restored full salaries of its staffers in India and South Asia. Cradlepoint and Verizon teamed up to help the IT team at Dallas County Elections meet government requirements with secure network redundancy for election nights.

With the 2020 primaries approaching, the general election soon to follow, and a transition to a vote centre model underway, Dallas County’s Office of Information Technology sought a time-efficient solution to a deeply important challenge.

The state government requires every vote centre to have network connection redundancy so workers have constant access to information from electronic poll books and other devices. This is particularly difficult because of the wide range of buildings that host these polling places, and requires the county to bring its own network.

In the United Kingdom, a company called Honest Mobile recently announced the debut of the UK's first carbon-neutral mobile network. Through emissions offsetting reforestation, the company said it can essentially provide carbon-neutral calls, texts and data. Honest Mobile stated that it will commit 1% of its revenue to reforestation. In the company’s app, customers can see how many trees Honest Mobile has planted on their behalf.

The wireless communications industry is not the first industry that comes to mind when people talk about emissions or increased sustainability, but actually, it does represent a significant share of global carbon emissions. According to research published by mobile phone maker Ericsson, the overall telecommunications industry accounts for about 1.4% of emissions worldwide. By comparison, the aviation industry generates 2% of all global carbon emissions.

In total, personal devices make up the biggest share of the telecommunications industry’s carbon footprint. About 50% of device-related emissions are associated with usage and the other 50% is associated with device life cycle. Networks and data centers account for the next biggest emission shares in the telecom industry.

Though people and their devices have comprised the majority of wireless communications, the growth of automation and the Internet of Things (IoT) will probably drive the rapid expansion of data networks. VMware wants to play nice with Nvidia DPUs

 VMware and Nvidia announced yesterday they are working to make VMware software work better with Nvidia chips. They say the joint initiative, dubbed Project Monterey, will “introduce a new security model that offloads hypervisor, networking, security and storage tasks from the CPU to the DPU”.

The aim is to offload hypervisor, networking, security and storage tasks from a host CPU to Nvidia’s BlueField data processing unit (DPU). This should be useful for AI, machine learning, and high-throughput, data-centric applications, according to the companies.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in the launch announcement: “Nvidia DPUs will give companies the ability to build secure, programmable, software-defined data centres that can accelerate all enterprise applications at exceptional value.”
