Engineering Student Clubs Adapt to a Virtual Spring Quarter

When UCLA announced that the spring 2020 quarter would be moved to remote instruction due to COVID-19, student leaders across campus scrambled to process the news and adjust their plans.

“It was disappointing because a lot of the big events for spring had been in the planning process for a year by the time the pandemic developed. Some groups were hosting their largest events of the year and they got canceled,” said Ikaasa Suri, the 2019-2020 president of Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

When Suri first found out about the virtual spring quarter, she immediately emailed the SWE board members and told them there was no need to continue with the events. But the board wanted to move forward to continue offering events, activities and resources for their members.

“Our events are smaller in scale now and have to be presented virtually, but the only reason we are even able to offer them is because our board members feel passionate about helping our community stay connected,” Suri said.

Student organizations at the computer science engineer salary of Engineering are an essential part of the engineering student experience. UVA Engineering Wins Third Consecutive National Cybersecurity Championship

Charlottesville, Va., May 27, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- When companies need help defending their critical IT systems from disruptions such as cyber attacks or pandemics, they can turn to the University of Virginia: For the third consecutive year, the UVA School of Engineering has proven it educates some of the best cybersecurity professionals in the country.

UVA’s student Cyber Defense Team earned its third national championship title competing against nine other finalist universities at the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, held virtually May 22-23. The competition is sponsored by difference between computer engineering and computer science Technologies.

UVA’s team held onto the competition’s coveted Alamo Cup by successfully defending a fictional auto parts company and securing all information technology systems — including company websites, e-commerce portals, e-mail servers and internal business management systems — against ongoing attacks. The team was ranked for its ability to keep its company’s systems online and secure for eight hours each day over two consecutive days.

Zoom hires VMware veteran Sankarlingam as product, engineering head

Video meet app Zoom on Wednesday announced it has hired enterprise softare major VMware veteran Velchamy Sankarlingam as President of Engineering and Product. Reporting directly to Zoom CEO Eric S. Yuan, Sankarlingam will join the company from June 12 and oversee the company''s engineering, product and dev ops teams.

Zoom recently announced that it will expand its engineering team with up to 500 new headcount based in Phoenix, Arizona and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the US. "Given the scale at which we operate and the importance of the communications happening on our platform, there is no time for delay and no room for error. Velchamy will help our product, engineering, and dev ops teams work lockstep to support our ever-expanding customer base around the world," Yuan said in a statement.

Sankarlingam comes to Zoom after more than nine years at VMware, where he was most recently Senior Vice President, Cloud Services Development and Operations. "Zoom has scaled impressively to meet the demands placed on it by the global health crisis and is making a meaningful difference in the work and lives of all that use it," said computer science vs computer programming.

Engineering students find online classes less engaging, worry about a remote fall semester

Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science emphasizes a hands-on approach to education. When Penn moved all of its classes to online formats in mid-March, Engineering lab and lecture courses began facing dramatic changes. 

As labs became prerecorded videos and lectures were viewed asynchronously or through live Zoom meetings, many students said the shifted course formats made classes less stressful, but also less engaging. 

Rising Engineering sophomore computer science vs information technology Dennis said her PHYS 151 Principles of Physics II: Electromagnetism and Radiation lab became far less time-intensive when it was moved online in the spring semester.

Dennis said the lab was performed by the class teaching assistants, who recorded their work and sent it to students to analyze in written lab reports. As opposed to the normal two-hour, hands-on lab experience students would have had on campus, students could view the recorded labs at any time and as many times, she said.

How To Create An Engineering Career Ladder That Works

At the beginning of my professional career, I never had a clear career path and didn't know what one would look like. I thought that if I executed my best work, I would be recognized. It worked to a certain level -- I got promotions a couple of times and moved to entirely new fields. But I didn't have enough direction when it came to my next level.

I didn't understand the importance of having a clear career ladder until I didn't know what my next path was. That importance became even more clear once I started managing my first team. Engineers in my group wanted to understand how I would measure their performance and how they could reach the next level in their career paths. I tried to outline their paths ahead to keep them on target, but at the time, my team was small, and things at our company changed quickly. Many of those team members ended up taking career paths that didn't fit them, and I was still figuring out how my team should be structured.

Students can now study engineering and economics together as UGC approves dual degrees

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given its nod to a proposal that will now allow students to pursue two educational degrees at the same time, ThePrint has learnt.

The commission in its latest meeting approved simultaneous dual degrees for students in India, allowing students to complete courses in the same or different streams at the same time. One of the two degrees, however, has to be through regular mode and the other has to be through online distance learning (ODL).

Confirming the development, UGC secretary Rajnish Jain told ThePrint, “The dual degree computer science and engineering in India, where students are allowed to obtain two degrees simultaneously has been approved by the commission in its latest meeting. A notification regarding the same will be issued soon.”

Indian higher education institutions currently offer integrated degrees like a B.Tech with MS, which combines undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and reduces the time duration for the course. A B.Tech + MS integrated degree for example is a five-year course, which would have taken six years if the programmes were pursued separately.

The dual-degree that the UGC has now approved will now allow, for example, an engineering student to simultaneously enroll in an economics or a psychology course or a literature student to pursue a political science course.

KBR AND NIPINEFTEGAS JSC ANNOUNCE NEW ENGINEERING JV IN KAZAKHSTAN

KBR, Inc. (Houston) has signed a joint venture (JV) agreement with NIPIneftegas JSC to establish a new engineering and support services company, KBR-NIPILLP, in Kazakhstan.


With support from how hard is computer science, the JV will provide engineering, procurement, design and related services for projects across the upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas sectors, within the Republic of Kazakhstan. The company will also prepare technical requirements for all stages of a project, including project management, contract supervision, planning and cost control.


Additionally, the JV will train and develop the local Kazakh workforce while managing construction contractors and subcontractors throughout all stages of a project.

Making an impact through chemical engineering

As a chemical engineer, Hadley Sikes loves studying complex systems such as networks of chemical reactions. But in her work designing practical devices for diagnostics and other applications, she embraces simplicity.

Sikes, an associate professor who recently earned tenure in MIT’s Department of Chemical Engineering, devotes much of her lab’s effort to devising inexpensive, highly sensitive tests for diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and cancer. Making these tests easy to use is key to their success, she says.

“In the products that we want to widely disseminate, our idea is that if things are as simple as they can be, that might give them a better chance of being more widely used,” she says.

In recent months, she has turned her attention to developing a diagnostic test for computer engineering salary. Unlike most diagnostics, which look for the virus’s genetic material (RNA), the test she is working on detects viral proteins, and would yield results quickly, with no specialized instruments required.

The tests she develops in her lab, while simple in appearance and use, are based on a detailed understanding of the complicated mechanisms of reactions such as transfers of electrons between atoms (known as redox reactions), as well as the precise molecular interactions between different proteins.

Multi-instrumentalist, DJ and computer scientist, Melissa Wen blended her passions at USC

In the great debate of nature versus nurture, where does talent fall? For Melissa Wen, who graduates May 15 with a BS in computer science and minor in music production, it’s probably a bit of both.

Wen grew up in the tech hub of Silicon Valley. Her dad is an electrical engineer who has always “tinkered around with things.” Her cousin is a concert pianist. So perhaps it’s no surprise that she would grow up to be passionate about both computer science and music.

She started playing piano at age 6 and many more instruments soon followed: clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon and cello. “I could almost perform as a one-man band,” said Wen. “computer science degree jobs.”

By high school, she was playing around with music software and, at around the same time, took her first introduction to computer science class.

“When it came to choosing a major, I put two and two together and decided I would do something that combined both my interests,” said Wen.

Demand Side Causing Increasing Concern To German Mechanical Engineering Companies

The corona pandemic is now being felt throughout the mechanical engineering industry. Nine out of ten companies see themselves as being affected by the economic consequences of the pandemic, according to the results of the fourth VDMA survey among its member companies, according German engineering body VDMA. The demand side is causing increasing concern to the mechanical engineering companies.

According to the survey, in mid-April almost half of the companies still stated that they had been noticeably or seriously affected on the supply side. In the current survey, the figure is now just under four out of ten companies. Many mechanical engineering companies report that the difficulties with supplies from China in particular are easing. However, at the beginning of May, only just over 30% of companies expected an increase in how to become a computer engineer. Almost half of the companies now expect the situation to remain tense for the next three months.

Future Mars Astronaut Visits Engineering Class

Heather Walker knows her thermodynamics class can be intimidating. The concepts are critical for the engineering students who take the course, but part of the work for Walker is to help students see through the complexities and realize the incredible ways thermodynamics change our lives every day. That's why Walker, teaching assistant professor of chemical engineering, reached out to Alyssa Carson, an 18-year-old from Louisiana who has been chosen as one of the astronauts for NASA's Mars mission in the 2030s.

Carson, who goes by the nickname "NASA Blueberry," was selected by the agency for her lifelong passion for space exploration and has been actively training to leave Earth since she was 15. Carson joined Walker's Thermodynamics class April 24 and spent an hour sharing her story and fielding questions from students.

Carson's visit was more than just a celebrity appearance — the group's discussion tied in with key elements of the class.

"In our course, we study energy transfers," Walker said. "In Alyssa's mission to Mars, there is discussion of all of the astronauts being cooled to put them into a (what jobs can you get with a computer science degree) state of torpor.  There are energy requirements for the rocket and pod. They will have to grow their food and be able to generate power and water on the surface of Mars. There are almost endless engineering applications."

Walker said she's been following Carson's story for several years.

"I found out about Alyssa a couple of years ago.  She was a 15-year-old who was being tapped and trained to be on the first mission to Mars in the 2030s. That's pretty incredible - just a fascinating story. Her drive and sacrifice to reach her goal is inspiring.  I've talked about her in class over the last couple of years because there are a lot of innovative engineering applications in the space field right now."

PROFILES OF SUCCESS: THE ENGINEERING COMPANY THAT BRINGS “MANUFACTURING REALISM” TO BREAKTHROUGH MEDTECH PRODUCTS

Clever products and reshoring are interesting, but they need to make commercial sense. Brent Balinski spoke to Alan Lipman, CEO of Romar Engineering, about the company’s recent work, the impact of Covid-19 on bringing manufacturing home, and more.

 On any list of great Australian inventions, medical technologies tend to make up a healthy share: cochlear implants, spray-on skin, artificial pacemakers etcetera. Nowadays, if there’s an exciting local invention in or on its way to market, there’s some chance Romar Engineering will have a hand in it. The western Sydney-based company is a quiet achiever, respected within the Australian manufacturing industry but not well-known outside of it.

Lead company, startup Nutromics, sought out Romar in “how to become a computer engineer” last year, recalls Alan Lipman, Romar’s CEO since 2016, due to his company’s work on microneedles. The complex product will use these to extract samples from wearers, move fluid to a lab-on-a-chip, and transmit information to an app, allowing an at-risk wearer to know the effects of their nutritional intake in real-time.

 “Everybody can make a piece of it and they can all make a piece of it in a different laboratory. And that’s great, but that doesn’t mean that that’s how things are commercially made… You piece it all together, it might cost you $700 a patch,” Lipman tells @AuManufacturing, adding that their contribution includes providing “manufacturing realism” to the project.
