Sandvik to deploy Nokia 5G wireless network at test mine

Nokia announced Tuesday that Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology will deploy a Nokia 5G SA industrial-grade private wireless network at its test mine in Tampere, Finland.

Based on Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC), the 5G standalone (SA) network will be used to enhance communications and connectivity at the facility, a real-life mining environment where Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology tests, develops and prototypes mining solutions.

Nokia said the network will enable fast, reliable and secure voice and video communications in a mining setting, which presents challenging deployment conditions. Its 5G capability will also be used for automated mining processes, enabling remote machine operations over 4K video links between deep underground and the surface control center.

“By deploying a Nokia 5G SA private wireless network with Nokia Digital Automation Cloud, we can trial and showcase an entirely new range of game-changing products and capabilities here in our computer science or computer engineering test mine,” said Patrick Murphy, president, rock drills and technologies, Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology.

4 ways engineering could change after the Covid-19 pandemic

The devastating spread of Covid-19 touched every aspect of our lives, bringing many challenges – but also opportunities for positive change. Here’s how engineering could look after the pandemic.

The engineering response to the sudden demands of the coronavirus was inspiring. Whether building ventilators, making personal protective equipment or creating new hospital capacity, companies and institutions from across the spectrum came together in a spirit of collaboration.

Even firms traditionally seen as rivals came together, demonstrating what can be achieved when looking beyond profit margins.

Collaboration forged new connections that will carry over into the post-pandemic world, said computer science vs computer engineering and Oxford professor Mark Thompson, who led the Oxvent ventilator project. “The crisis has provided the ideal conditions within which an engineering perspective can flourish, because it provides wider adoption of the supportive and collaborative principles which engineers work by,” he said. “I think everyone will carry forward with them the experience of how they responded. In that sense it will irrevocably change the way that the networks are put together.”

Nod for new generation engineering courses

The APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University has approved the introduction of new-generation courses in 21 engineering colleges in the State this academic year onwards.

The Syndicate which met on Wednesday sanctioned 27 B.Tech. and 13 M.Tech. courses in three government, two aided, three government-controlled self-financing and 13 private self-financing colleges.

While the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET) has been sanctioned an additional batch of B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering with 60 seats, the college will also offer M.Tech programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Power Electronics with intake of 18 seats each.

Government Engineering College, Thrissur, has been permitted to commence five M.Tech courses in Industrial Engineering and Management, how hard is computer science, Electrical Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Health Safety and Environmental Management, and Geotechnical Engineering with 18 seats each.

Government Engineering College, Sreekrishnapuram, Palakkad, will also commence M.Tech programmes with 18 seats each in Mechanical Engineering (Robotics), Electronics and Communication Engineering (Internet of Things), and a B.Tech course in Civil Engineering with an intake of 60 seats.

Students can now study engineering and economics together as UGC approves dual degrees

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given its nod to a proposal that will now allow students to pursue two educational degrees at the same time, ThePrint has learnt.

The commission in its latest meeting approved simultaneous dual degrees for students in India, allowing students to complete courses in the same or different streams at the same time. One of the two degrees, however, has to be through regular mode and the other has to be through online distance learning (ODL).

Confirming the development, UGC secretary Rajnish Jain told ThePrint, “The dual degree computer science and engineering in India, where students are allowed to obtain two degrees simultaneously has been approved by the commission in its latest meeting. A notification regarding the same will be issued soon.”

Indian higher education institutions currently offer integrated degrees like a B.Tech with MS, which combines undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and reduces the time duration for the course. A B.Tech + MS integrated degree for example is a five-year course, which would have taken six years if the programmes were pursued separately.

The dual-degree that the UGC has now approved will now allow, for example, an engineering student to simultaneously enroll in an economics or a psychology course or a literature student to pursue a political science course.

Demand Side Causing Increasing Concern To German Mechanical Engineering Companies

The corona pandemic is now being felt throughout the mechanical engineering industry. Nine out of ten companies see themselves as being affected by the economic consequences of the pandemic, according to the results of the fourth VDMA survey among its member companies, according German engineering body VDMA. The demand side is causing increasing concern to the mechanical engineering companies.

According to the survey, in mid-April almost half of the companies still stated that they had been noticeably or seriously affected on the supply side. In the current survey, the figure is now just under four out of ten companies. Many mechanical engineering companies report that the difficulties with supplies from China in particular are easing. However, at the beginning of May, only just over 30% of companies expected an increase in how to become a computer engineer. Almost half of the companies now expect the situation to remain tense for the next three months.

Why we need a new approach to network energy efficiency

With 5G, the mobile industry finally has an opportunity to expand traffic while reducing energy consumption across the network. However, breaking this energy curve will take more than just technology. Find out why below. Our recent report about breaking the energy curve offers a blueprint for service providers to evolve their networks towards nationwide 5G while lowering energy consumption.

In doing so, service providers can achieve something which historically has never happened before. They can finally break the network energy curve. Today’s mobile networks already consume a considerable amount of energy at a global energy cost of USD 25 billion. As we move ahead into 5G, the energy stakes look set to get even higher.

But why now with 5G?

Each new mobile generation has brought with it a rise in energy consumption. With 5G, this traditional trajectory has the potential to grow significantly. For example, as forecast in our latest Mobility Report, mobile networks will carry four times the data of today’s networks by 2025. This will also add new demands on service providers to increase network capacity, extend geographical coverage and deploy advanced technology use cases computer engineering salary.

Already, many service providers expect their energy consumption to soon double. This is the result of a need to densify the network and meet increasing traffic demands while improving their networks and rolling out new 5G frequencies. This is clearly not sustainable from business nor environmental perspective. But what is the way forward for the mobile industry? Is it possible to quadruple data traffic while at the same time sinking energy consumption?
