Travis Hester Named New Chief GM EV Officer

 During the recent Barclay’s Global Automotive Conference, GM CEO Mary Barra laid out the automaker’s ambitions to deliver a robust EV portfolio, while simultaneously driving consumer adoption and quickly creating shareholder value. During the event, Barra named Travis Hester as the new Chief GM EV Officer. In his new role, Hester will head GM’s EV Growth Operations organization, which aims to combine the agility of a start-up with the backbone strength of General Motors.

“The team will be entirely focused on the EV business and driving mass consumer adoption,” Barra explained. “[Hester] will be empowered to minimize complexity and make decisions fast.” Hester will report to GM President Mark Reuss and GM North America President Steve Carlisle.Hester previously served as President of GM Canada and GM Global Vice President of Customer Experience, and is credited with creating an expansive automotive software engineering workforce, all of which is critical experience when managing the high-tech GM computer science vs computer programming lineup.

“[Hester] has spent the past year working to elevate every customer interaction and experience to world-class levels through our entire purchase and ownership process,” Barra said.

Additionally, Hester served as the chief engineer for the Cadillac CT6, often considered GM’s technological flagship with regard to its innovative Omega architecture, rear-wheel steering technology, and Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving technology, among other innovations. Only 3% of India’s engineering graduates land quality tech jobs with packages over Rs 8 lakh

Of an estimated 15 lakh engineers graduate in India every year, of which only 2.5 lakh students land relevant jobs in technical domains, claims the latest survey by Scaler – an edtech startup. In opposition to the perception, most of the engineers in India rather end up getting paid less than Rs 8 lakh. As per the survey, out of those roughly 2.2 lakh openings are in software, within which a vast majority (1.8 lakh jobs) are in IT services garnering around only Rs 3-5 lakh per annum in remuneration. Report further suggest that of the available engineering jobs, only 40,000 jobs — for around 3 per cent of 15 lakh engineers get a mix of autonomy with packages upwards of Rs 8-10 lakh per annum for is computer science engineering. Additionally, of the 3 per cent of graduates who land coveted high-paying and quality jobs, the majority come from Tier 1 colleges — implying the lack of good quality opportunities for students from Tier 2 and Tier 3 colleges.

Mundo PacĂ­fico selects IP Infusion and Whitestack for deploying HyperNET, the first disaggregated optical network in Latin America

IP Infusion, a leading provider of network disaggregation solutions for telecom and data communications operators, today announced that Mundo Pacifico, a Chile-based telecommunications provider, is increasing its network capacity for major cities in central Chile by deploying IP Infusion’s OcNOS® network operating system and HyperNET, a software-defined IP network based on Cassini (the Coherent Switch developed within the Telecom Infra Project).

HyperNET is based on Cassini, a disaggregated coherent switch and open packet transponder from Edgecore Networks, that provides high performance switching along with long-haul CFP2 coherent optics modules. Contrary to the traditional approaches, Cassini collapses the Optical to the IP layers in a single platform, making it very efficient for managing huge volumes of traffic.

Counselling moved online for lateral entry to engineering, MBA and MCA in TN

In a first, the counselling for lateral entry to Tamil Nadu’s undergraduate engineering programmes, and MBA and MCA courses will be conducted online.

According to reports, the announcement was made on Sunday by KP Anbalagan, the Minister for Higher Education that the decision was taken due to the COVID-19 crisis in the state. The counselling for lateral entry of students to BE/BTech courses - which is the direct entry of those who have completed polytechnic course into the second year of engineering programmes -was earlier scheduled to be held at the computer science vs computer programming Government College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi. Around 15,000 students enter into BE/BTech courses in Tamil Nadu every year through the lateral method.

Final year exams only for degree, PG and engineering

Only the final year degree, post-graduation and engineering students will go for exams in Telangana to maintain academic sanctity in universities as per the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

All the others in the three streams of university education will be promoted to the next higher class without any exams.

This was decided at a meeting convened by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao with officials to discuss various aspects of academic calendar in the State on Thursday.

It was also decided to begin the new academic year for engineering colleges from August 17 but defer reopening of schools and the model of education till the release of guidelines by the computer science vs information technology and studying trends in other States.

The June-ended quarter was one of the toughest quarters for TCS, something which it had flagged off at the end of Q4. Profits, revenues and margins were hit as a result of Covid-19. N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Chief Operating Officer, TCS, spoke to BusinessLine on the company’s plans, including whether remote working will render H1-B visas worthless, its plans to launch an India-specific NBFC platform and its M&A strategy to drive growth.

In the June-ended quarter, how much do computer scientists make and used it beyond (software) delivery. We used it to prospect customers, sell it to customers, remotely onboard clients, as well as new employees. This is reflected in the 37 new client wins in Q1.

On the project execution part of SBWS, we still have some customers who have not given approvals for WFH. Around 700 employees in TCS are not enabled to work remotely. Out of the 700, a small percentage of employees are unable to work due to the fact that we were not able to deliver equipment to our employees’ homes. We had business continuity strategies in place. If there was an outage in one site, we could move to another. If there was an outage in a city, we had another option. If there was an outage in a country, we had another option. But this was unforeseen as every country was hit. Also, SBWS was not thought of as a temporary measure, in reaction to Covid-19.

Industry Voices—Raynovich: Itential pushes JSON schemas for the telco cloud

Itential, an interesting Atlanta—based startup focused on network automation, today announced a new set of tools called Pre-Built Transformations designed to help service providers and enterprises automate their networking systems.

The Transformations make heavy use of JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), which can be used to take standard data models and Applications Programming Interfaces (APIs) and program orchestration and connectivity of devices and systems by using a flexible data schema. The program is designed to help speed up the integration and automation of multi-domain networks by mapping out data model and API paths for automation.

Why is this important? Service providers have been challenged to keep up with cloud-scale development, in part because large swaths of their infrastructure is attached to legacy hardware and software systems, each with their own management systems and computer engineer salary. Itential’s approach is to provide an abstracted, software bridge between legacy systems and modern Web-based management, which is more focused on data models and APIs to build integration.

Engineering and medical entrance exams to be held on July 16- CM

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said that the engineering, medical entrance examinations in the state will be held on July 16, as per schedule.

The Commissioner of Entrance Examination had said the state will conduct the Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical (KEAM) exam on July 16 as per schedule.

"The entrance examinations would be held as scheduled. Special test centres are being opened in hot spots/containment zones so that students in those areas can take the entrance exam without going out," Vijayan said.

He also said that special arrangements will be made for those students in quarantine or those coming from red zones.

Over one computer science vs computer engineering salary candidates will appear for the entrance examination, to be conducted in 342 centres located at Kerala and Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai on July 16.

How an Electrical Engineer Molded Computer Science At Cornell and Beyond

After a 53-year long career at Cornell spent shaping the field of computer science and its disciples, Prof. John Hopcroft delivered his final lecture to an empty lecture hall on April 29.

It was not how he envisioned his last hurrah.

“It’s fundamentally different to teach a hundred students when they’re physically there and you can interact with them, and when you’re giving a lecture to an empty hall and simply being videotaped,” Hopcroft said in an interview with The Sun. Hopcroft’s illustrious reign over computer science research and education began with his own teachers, who showed him what it meant to be a good educator.

“[Throughout my education] there were a number of faculty who really cared about my learning, and my being successful,” Hopcroft said. “They had a big impact on me, and I wanted to have that kind of impact on others.”

After earning his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1964, Hopcroft carried these values with him to a three-year long professorship at Princeton University. But his focus shifted from electrical engineering to computer science.

Amid the growing importance of computers and lack of computer science education programs in the mid 1960s, Hopcroft stumbled into teaching theoretical courses in computing. Though initially hired for his skills in electrical engineering, computer engineering salary was asked to use his engineering background to create his own computer science course so Princeton could keep its education up to par in a rapidly developing technological world. Hopcroft’s experience at Princeton led to his subsequent hiring at Cornell, where he had a hand in building a world-class computer science department.

Mentoring, job ads, flexible working: making civil engineering more appealing to women

There are around 83,000 civil engineers in the UK, according to government figures, yet only 12% of them are women. The good news is that the number of women studying civil engineering had increased from 13.5% to 20% in the 10 years between 2007 and 2017, according to a study by Ucas.

Penny Marshall, North East regional director at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), says while considerable progress has been made over the last decade, it’s disappointing this has not yet delivered a step change in the number of women coming into the profession. “The zero-carbon imperative and the need to adapt to cope with the changing climate will provide many more opportunities over the next decade, and I hope will entice more women to join our ranks,” she says.

Faye computer engineering definition, head of energy performance and service at Siemens says the sustainability factor makes civil engineering more appealing to women. “I have worked across the energy industry for over 16 years and I am left with one overriding impression: sustainability attracts women.”

5 Indian-Origin Techies In UK's Top 50 Women In Engineering List

The UK Atomic Energy Authority's Chitra Srinivasan is among five Indian-origin engineers to be named among the UK's Top 50 Women in Engineering for 2020.

Mr Srinivasan, a control and software engineer at UKAEA's fusion research lab at Culham Science Centre near Abingdon in south-east England, was joined by transport engineer Ritu Garg, seismic engineer Barnali Ghosh, climate change expert Anusha Shah and senior engineer Kusum Trikha for the Women's Engineering Day awards announced on Tuesday.

Judged by a panel of industry experts, the awards seek to recognise female talent within engineering and is coordinated annually by the Women's Engineering Society.

In its fifth year, the awards focused on sustainability -- celebrating female engineers who are making a significant contribution to achieving net zero carbon emission.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority hailed how much do computer scientists make success as part of a team developing fusion energy as a carbon-free source of electricity that could be used around the world.

Webinar to promote Women in Engineering

To mark Tuesday’s Women in Engineering Day, the Institute of Refrigeration is holding a career development day to celebrate and promote the role of women in the RACHP industry. 

The IoR is hosting a live hour-long webinar featuring members of its Women in RACHP Network who will be sharing their career experiences in a panel discussion, as well as an interactive Q&A session.

For the fourth year running, the IoR’s participation is being sponsored by Star Refrigeration, whose HR manager, Nadia Rae said: “We are continuing to drive change in the RACHP sector by actively seeking to bring more women into our engineering business in different roles. It is a challenge to attract more women to a career in an historically male-dominated industry, but the picture is improving year on year.”

Nadia adds: “Our belief is that the focus on promoting engineering as a career path for women should start as early as possible. By bringing roles within the engineering industry to the attention of children of primary school age, we hope that more women will seek to join the computer science and engineering sector in the future.”

The IOR first established its UK-wide network to promote women in RACHP on International Women in Engineering Day 2016. The Women in RACHP Network is open to anyone working in a engineering-related role, including service and maintenance, design, research, sales, marketing, administration and training.

ST Engineering Receives First-ever Authorisation from CAAS to Perform Aircraft Inspection Using Drones

ST Engineering will be using its in-house developed drone solution, DroScan to carry out General Visual Inspection (GVI) during aircraft maintenance at its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities in Singapore after its Aerospace sector received authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). This is the first-ever authorisation granted by CAAS for the use of unmanned aerial systems to perform GVI on Singapore-registered aircraft.  With this computer engineering definition, ST Engineering can apply its DroScan solution on approved aircraft models such as the Airbus A320 family.  

An end-to-end aircraft external general inspection solution, DroScan leverages automation and smart analytics capabilities to bring about higher efficiency and greater workplace safety during aircraft maintenance work. The Group had over the past one year demonstrated the solution’s capabilities and benefits through a number of successful trials with participating airline customers including Air New Zealand. By using drones to physically carry out visual inspections, DroScan eliminates the need to set up bulky ground equipment such as boom-lifts and work stands for inspectors to climb up and down during manual inspections. Inspectors can instead conduct indirect GVI using live video feed and post-flight images captured by the drones. Captured images can be fed through algorithms that detect and classify defects to assist the inspectors in the review process.

How engineering can adapt to the 'new normal'

The coronavirus started as a health pandemic, but the massive outbreak will create long-lasting changes that will alter the way we live and work. Like other industries, the engineering and construction sector has also been seriously impacted, and engineers keep wondering how this pandemic will change the way they work in the future.  The long-term impact on the engineering and construction industry will be far-reaching and may even change the industry's operating structure.

In the immediate term, important ongoing projects should continue, until and unless the supply chains are disrupted by a shortage of subcontractors and materials. Most likely, public agencies may consider suspending contracts to control expenses. With little choice but to conserve cash, many private entities may opt to postpone or delay their originally planned projects.

In Thailand, engineering firms may be able to execute the backlog of projects, but what in the pipeline could be exhausted sooner or later. The industry should keep an eye on the status of ongoing infrastructure megaprojects especially those still under planning. One must wonder if there will be any policy change due to the global financial crunch. Maybe, hopefully, foreign investors still consider Thailand's investment as their priority for some unknown reasons.

In line for consolidation, strategic sale: Several engineering, metals, chem cos

A privatization push from the central government is expected to see a number of state-owned companies in the engineering, metals & minerals and chemicals sectors being either consolidated by other PSUs or strategically sold to private sector companies, sources familiar with the discussions said. The government sees privatization and consolidation of state-owned companies in certain sectors where they are over represented as the second “generation reform” that is necessary to give a structural push to growth.
“This is part of the second generation reforms that has been launched. Demand up for emerging technology courses

Emerging and in-demand areas of learning at engineering level have started to take over from the traditionally popular courses such as Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Mechanical Engineering and Civil engineering.

Course such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and Data Science have started to take precedence which can be seen from private engineering colleges wanting to shift to them while ceding some seats in other regular courses.

For the academic year 2020-2021, around 120 private engineering colleges have applied to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H) seeking conversion of nearly 20,000 seats in EEE, Mechanical and Civil engineering courses into programmes in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, IoT and Data Science.

This year, JNTU-H has approved introduction of what can you do with a computer science degree in emerging technologies including Computer Engineering-Software Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering-Cyber Security, Computer Science and Engineering-Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computer Science and Engineering-Data Science, Computer Science and Engineering-Internet of Things and Computer Science and Engineering-Networks.

Engineering Student Clubs Adapt to a Virtual Spring Quarter

When UCLA announced that the spring 2020 quarter would be moved to remote instruction due to COVID-19, student leaders across campus scrambled to process the news and adjust their plans.

“It was disappointing because a lot of the big events for spring had been in the planning process for a year by the time the pandemic developed. Some groups were hosting their largest events of the year and they got canceled,” said Ikaasa Suri, the 2019-2020 president of Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

When Suri first found out about the virtual spring quarter, she immediately emailed the SWE board members and told them there was no need to continue with the events. But the board wanted to move forward to continue offering events, activities and resources for their members.

“Our events are smaller in scale now and have to be presented virtually, but the only reason we are even able to offer them is because our board members feel passionate about helping our community stay connected,” Suri said.

Student organizations at the computer science engineer salary of Engineering are an essential part of the engineering student experience. They provide academic support, professional development and a sense of community.
