THE STYLE OF CLOUD NETWORKING IN THE CORPORATE DATACENTER

It is easy to understand the lure of the public cloud’s siren call. There’s the flexibility and agility to enable immediate elastic scaling up or down as needed, the tools and services needed for running modern workloads like artificial intelligence and data analytics, the removal of headaches related to deploying and managing vast numbers of systems – enterprises in large part no longer want to run their own datacenter infrastructures – and the cost efficiencies, with no longer having to pay upfront for hardware and instead leveraging models like pay-per-use.

The benefits of the cloud have been put in even greater focus during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced businesses to accelerate their digital efforts to adapt to a rapidly evolving business environment where most people are working remotely. In addition, businesses are seeing their revenues and budgets shrink in the wake of the public health crisis, driving many of them to look to the cloud to run more of their workloads. Synergy Research Group noted that in the first quarter, while spending on traditional computer science average salary hardware and software fell 4 percent year-over-year, revenues in the public cloud datacenter infrastructure market grew 3 percent.

Sandvik to deploy Nokia 5G wireless network at test mine

Nokia announced Tuesday that Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology will deploy a Nokia 5G SA industrial-grade private wireless network at its test mine in Tampere, Finland.

Based on Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC), the 5G standalone (SA) network will be used to enhance communications and connectivity at the facility, a real-life mining environment where Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology tests, develops and prototypes mining solutions.

Nokia said the network will enable fast, reliable and secure voice and video communications in a mining setting, which presents challenging deployment conditions. Its 5G capability will also be used for automated mining processes, enabling remote machine operations over 4K video links between deep underground and the surface control center.

“By deploying a Nokia 5G SA private wireless network with Nokia Digital Automation Cloud, we can trial and showcase an entirely new range of game-changing products and capabilities here in our computer science or computer engineering test mine,” said Patrick Murphy, president, rock drills and technologies, Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology.

Engineering a Comeback for Blank-Check Companies

In the 1990s, so-called blank check companies weren't held in the highest regard. That didn’t matter to this week's guest on Masters in Business, Martin Franklin of Mariposa CapitalFranklin was among those in the early 2000s who revived the use of what are formally known as special-purpose acquisition companies, or Spacs, as vehicles for acquisitions and taking private companies public. Spacs that he headed up or participated in enabled companies such as GLG, Prisa, Phoenix Life, Burger King and Macdermid Specialty chemicals to bypass the process of using initial public offerings.

Along the way, these Spacs generated stunning returns. In 2006, he founded Justice Holdings with Bill Ackman of Pershing Square as an investor. Justice Holdings merged with Burger King in 2012, creating a successful exit from closely held ownership. Other exits include what do computer engineers do.; it generated returns of 1,800%. Franklin became head of Jarden Corp., a conglomerate of consumer brands, which he grew from a company with $300 million in annual revenue to one with more than $10 billion. Jarden was acquired in 2016 by Newell Rubbermaid, generating returns of 5,000%.

Final year exams only for degree, PG and engineering

Only the final year degree, post-graduation and engineering students will go for exams in Telangana to maintain academic sanctity in universities as per the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

All the others in the three streams of university education will be promoted to the next higher class without any exams.

This was decided at a meeting convened by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao with officials to discuss various aspects of academic calendar in the State on Thursday.

It was also decided to begin the new academic year for engineering colleges from August 17 but defer reopening of schools and the model of education till the release of guidelines by the computer science vs information technology and studying trends in other States.

The June-ended quarter was one of the toughest quarters for TCS, something which it had flagged off at the end of Q4. Profits, revenues and margins were hit as a result of Covid-19. N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Chief Operating Officer, TCS, spoke to BusinessLine on the company’s plans, including whether remote working will render H1-B visas worthless, its plans to launch an India-specific NBFC platform and its M&A strategy to drive growth.

In the June-ended quarter, how much do computer scientists make and used it beyond (software) delivery. We used it to prospect customers, sell it to customers, remotely onboard clients, as well as new employees. This is reflected in the 37 new client wins in Q1.

On the project execution part of SBWS, we still have some customers who have not given approvals for WFH. Around 700 employees in TCS are not enabled to work remotely. Out of the 700, a small percentage of employees are unable to work due to the fact that we were not able to deliver equipment to our employees’ homes. We had business continuity strategies in place. If there was an outage in one site, we could move to another. If there was an outage in a city, we had another option. If there was an outage in a country, we had another option. But this was unforeseen as every country was hit. Also, SBWS was not thought of as a temporary measure, in reaction to Covid-19.

Mentoring, job ads, flexible working: making civil engineering more appealing to women

There are around 83,000 civil engineers in the UK, according to government figures, yet only 12% of them are women. The good news is that the number of women studying civil engineering had increased from 13.5% to 20% in the 10 years between 2007 and 2017, according to a study by Ucas.

Penny Marshall, North East regional director at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), says while considerable progress has been made over the last decade, it’s disappointing this has not yet delivered a step change in the number of women coming into the profession. “The zero-carbon imperative and the need to adapt to cope with the changing climate will provide many more opportunities over the next decade, and I hope will entice more women to join our ranks,” she says.

Faye computer engineering definition, head of energy performance and service at Siemens says the sustainability factor makes civil engineering more appealing to women. “I have worked across the energy industry for over 16 years and I am left with one overriding impression: sustainability attracts women.”

Engineering exporters wary of non-clearance of cargo from China at Indian ports

Engineering exporters on Tuesday expressed concern over reported non-clearance of imported cargo from China at Indian ports, saying the move will disrupt supply chain and subsequently affect exports.

Amid heightened border tensions with China, Indian customs officials have started physical inspection of all consignments coming from the neighbouring country, based on intelligence inputs, though there is no formal order, according to government sources.

"Imports from China are not being cleared at various ports by the customs. EEPC members have written to the authorities concerned that this will impact the supply chain which in turn will affect exports," a source at Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) of India said.

According to the source, some of the engineering exporters have conveyed to how much do computer engineers make that the move will have an impact on their operations.

"One way out is to differentiate steps which are reasonable and those which will have an adverse impact," the source said.

5 Indian-Origin Techies In UK's Top 50 Women In Engineering List

The UK Atomic Energy Authority's Chitra Srinivasan is among five Indian-origin engineers to be named among the UK's Top 50 Women in Engineering for 2020.

Mr Srinivasan, a control and software engineer at UKAEA's fusion research lab at Culham Science Centre near Abingdon in south-east England, was joined by transport engineer Ritu Garg, seismic engineer Barnali Ghosh, climate change expert Anusha Shah and senior engineer Kusum Trikha for the Women's Engineering Day awards announced on Tuesday.

Judged by a panel of industry experts, the awards seek to recognise female talent within engineering and is coordinated annually by the Women's Engineering Society.

In its fifth year, the awards focused on sustainability -- celebrating female engineers who are making a significant contribution to achieving net zero carbon emission.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority hailed how much do computer scientists make success as part of a team developing fusion energy as a carbon-free source of electricity that could be used around the world.

Nod for new generation engineering courses

The APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University has approved the introduction of new-generation courses in 21 engineering colleges in the State this academic year onwards.

The Syndicate which met on Wednesday sanctioned 27 B.Tech. and 13 M.Tech. courses in three government, two aided, three government-controlled self-financing and 13 private self-financing colleges.

While the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET) has been sanctioned an additional batch of B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering with 60 seats, the college will also offer M.Tech programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Power Electronics with intake of 18 seats each.

Government Engineering College, Thrissur, has been permitted to commence five M.Tech courses in Industrial Engineering and Management, how hard is computer science, Electrical Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Health Safety and Environmental Management, and Geotechnical Engineering with 18 seats each.

Government Engineering College, Sreekrishnapuram, Palakkad, will also commence M.Tech programmes with 18 seats each in Mechanical Engineering (Robotics), Electronics and Communication Engineering (Internet of Things), and a B.Tech course in Civil Engineering with an intake of 60 seats.

Singapore Replaces US As India's Top market For Engineering Exports

Singapore replaced the United States as India's biggest overseas market for engineering parts in April, with exports rising 95 per cent to $553 million from a year earlier, a trade body said on Wednesday, as statistics are upended by coronavirus lockdowns. India's overall engineering exports, comprising industrial machinery and auto parts, constitute nearly a quarter of total goods exports, contracting in April and May due to the computer engineering jobs and weak global demand, traders said. "Singapore has replaced the US as the number one destination for Indian engineering exports," said Ravi Sehgal, chairman of the India'a Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC). Engineering exports to China were up 19 per cent year on year to $173 million, he said.

However, total engineering exports were down 63.9 per cent in April to $2.31 billion from $6.4 billion, the EEPC said. In April, for which latest data is available, engineering exports to the United States declined 75% to $222 million.

Science and Engineering Problems Addressed by Advances in Optical Microscopy

New Illinois ECE research is advancing the field of optical microscopy, giving the field a critical new tool to solve challenging problems across many fields of science and engineering including semiconductor wafer inspection, nanoparticle sensing, material characterization, biosensing, virus counting, and microfluidic monitoring. The question is often asked, “Why can we not see or sense nanoscale objects under a light microscope?” The textbook answers are that their relative signals are weak, and their separation is smaller than Abbe’s resolution limit. 

However, the Illinois ECE research team, led by Illinois ECE Professor Lynford L Goddard, along with postdoc computer science vs computer engineering, and PhD student Aditi Udupa, is challenging these cornerstone principles with a brand-new optical framework. 


Their work, published in Nature Communications opens new doors to using optical microscopy to unravel difficult problems that impact our daily lives.  “Our work is significant not only because it advances scientific understanding of optical imaging but also because it enables researchers to directly visualize unlabeled objects that have deep sub-wavelength separations. We can see nanoscale structure without performing any image post-processing” said Goddard.

Can Software Performance Engineering Save Us From the End of Moore’s Law?

In the early years of aviation, one might have been forgiven for envisioning a future of ever-faster planes. Speeds had grown from what do computer engineers do per hour for the Wright brothers in 1903, to about 1000 kph for a Boeing 707 in the 1960s. But since then, commercial aircraft speeds have stagnated because higher speeds make planes so energy-inefficient.

Today’s computers suffer from a similar issue. For decades, our ability to miniaturize components led to us doubling the number of transistors on a silicon chip every two years or so. This phenomenon, known as Moore’s Law (named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore), has made computing exponentially cheaper and more powerful for decades. But we’re now reaching the limits of miniaturization, and so computing performance is stagnating.

This is a problem. Had Moore’s Law ended 20 years ago, the processors in today’s computers would be roughly 1000 times less powerful, and we wouldn’t have iPhones, Alexa or movie-streaming. What innovations might we miss out on 20 years from now if we can’t continue to improve computing performance?
